CHINGAY PARADE
We feel
that this trip is very enriching and helped us learn more about Singapore's different cultures. It also allow us to fully comprehend the meaning of one Singapore,
the spirit which binds all of us together as one nation. Although
there are a lot of races, we are considered as one nation. The different colors
represents the organizations and races and one nation represents one people' (
the fabric). It also taught us that Singapore is a multi-racial society which
works together as one. Different cultures, different languages, different skin
tones, different in many ways but as long as we put our hearts together as one,
nothing will come in our way.
Personal Reflection:
Entong:
It was my first time watching the chingay parade not on tv but in real life! Although it was just a rehearsal performance, i could say that the performers really put in their best effort. There were many elaborated and beautifully decorated floats showing different races as well as the places of interest of Singapore. I learnt more about the different ethnic races through those well decorated floats and their unique dances through the dancers and performers. It was really a fruitful experience as i was able to learn and enjoy at the same time. Not only that, the long batik cloth also showed how closely knitted is Singapore. I learnt more about the importance of racial harmony in Singapore since Singapore is a multi racial country. This was the highlight of the whole performance as it was the main focus, showing more about the theme of this year chingay parade: 布海同心. Not only was the performance amazing, there were also cheers led by students, showing how bonded our school is, even as a cohort. We also hyped up through the cheers as well as the fireworks at the end of the parade. It was really heart warming to see we, rv students, doing the cheers together, displaying school spirit. I felt that the whole chingay parade was enriching and it helped me to understand more about Singapore's culture and despite Singapore being a multi racial country, we are still united as one. I also gained more knowledge about the chingay parade, thus i feel that it was a really enjoyable trip!

Fernanda:
This was my truly first experience in catching a live Chingay parade. It feels great to be given this opportunity to watch the parade live. It was my first time experiencing the atmosphere and the way things function there. The theme this year, 布海同心, taught me the importance of coming together as a Singapore. Neither does one person's nor his race's efforts work alone. The only time when you achieve something great is when everyone joins their efforts to develop the best the want. An example is the batik cloth which was stitched by different races and organizations. It was a huge masterpiece and without everyone, the result would not have been as satisfying. Chingay parade 2014 is a great exposure for us students to understand more about the different cultures. It was a wonderful and enriching one and i hope to experience more of such.

Qianyu:
From the chingay, i have understood how this particular event symbolises Singapore's rich culture and history with beautiful and vibrant colours. It had symbolised the unity between different races in Singapore and how Singapore is united despite being a multi racial country. During the chingay, one of the most memorable sights was when the dancers brought out the 360m long batik. The long piece of batik, right orange in colour, was eye catching. Later then we realised its symbolism- it was sewed bit by bit together by different organisations. This fully shows how Singapore came together as one to complete this long task of sewing a 360 m long fabric just for the event and i feel immensely proud of the country and hard work put in by many who put in effort to make this event a success and successfully bringing out the message behind chingay- we are still an unified country despite the different races.

Chingay parade 2014 was a huge success, it was meant as learning experience. However, it also help us bond with our schoolmates more. Since we did not have to pay to go, it was even better. From each float, we can learn more about the organisation that owns the float. For an example, our group learnt that this year will be Tourism Singapore 50 year birthday as on Tourism Singapore's float, it states 50 years. Our school was very active, we kept on cheering and shaking our pom poms. Our school spirit was clearly visible and even the ushers found our school very enthusiastic and started cheering with us. Overall, the experience was a great one. In Chinese, this event was 一举两得, we bonded with our schoolmates better and took away from the event.
Suikiat:
It was the first chingay parade i have attended in my whole life and it was spectacular. The singapore spirit there was enormous as everybody cheered for the wonderful performances, put together by those who work for weeks and months just for this eventful night. Not only did we further develop the love for our country, our school spirit was also developed as we celebrated the event together as a school and watch the brilliant performances together. This event symbolized Singapore's short but rich culture and history. This event showed the many types of celebrations the different major races of Singapore had since many years ago. It shows how Singapore is not made up of different groups of people but how Singapore is one big country where everyone is united.

The 1 lesson I learnt so far(CID Lesson)
En Tong:
I had learnt how to use a blog meaningfully and how to decorate a blog to make the blog more interesting so that readers would be tempted to read it. I also learnt more about how to make presentation slides more appealing like using colourful fonts, inserting pictures and a beautiful background. I also learn that a slide shouldn't have too much words if not the reader would not feel interested to read. The scripting part must also be done well to. We can add some fun facts into it and try to use simple words. When we are presenting, we should also have eye contact with the audiences so that they would be more engaged in the presentation.
Qian Yu:
Sui Kiat:
I have learnt about how to observe and understand things from different perspectives. This is a very important skill as we always have to take note of how it's like to see things from another point of view and it also helps us correct our perspective due to understanding other viewpoints. This skill will help us go far in life as we can analyze things better and will not jump to conclusions.
Amos:
I have learnt a great deal of presentation skills from CID lessons. First a learnt that our slides must be clear cut and to the point. It must be kept as short as possible so that the auddiendpce will it be bored reading the screen, they would rather listen to us talk. We also learnt that we must speak loudly with confidence. Our slides must have a contrast with the colours. These presentation skills have are important for life as we might use them for job interviews and stuff like that
Qian Yu:
I have learnt a lot of presentation skills from CID. The lessons has taught me how to make slides or our blog itself more appealing to our viewers, adding pictures and vibrant colors to attract people's attention and also it does not bore people who reads our presentation slides or our blog. Decorating the blog has been important as well to get people to read our blog. Using more pictures rather than words is more benefitting as it will be more interesting, after all, people would of course rather look through interesting pictures with vibrant and bright colors than reading a long chunk of text. These skills are important and we can apply them in our life in the future, after finding a job.
Fernanda:
I learnt about making our things more presentable and appealing to the others. For instance, i have learnt to include more pictures on the blog rather than words because it makes the blog more interesting and people would want to read it more. I have also learnt that the design of the blog is also very important as it creates a first impression to the readers. Another example would be the recent cid project when we had to create presentation slides and the slides had to be of standards. Rather than wordy presentation slides, our group decided to write it in point form so that others would not have a tough time reading every single thing off the slides. They could just listen to our oral presentation and feel more comfortable.

Chinese New Year is a festival celebrated by most Chinese all over the world. Also known as the spring festival, the Chinese celebrate Chinese New Year as it represents the new year on the Chinese Lunar Calendar. During this 15 days, Chinese flock back to their own homes and gather with their family to celebrate this important festival together. The Chinese will wear red and visit their relatives during the days. There are also several practices on Chinese New Year. One traditional example is for every family to thoroughly cleanse the house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for good incoming luck.

Chinese New Year is a festival celebrated by Chinese from all over the world. The most popular colour during this festival is red. It is said that red brings luck to the family and it is a bright colour and therefore it makes Chinese New Year a happier occasion. Red is also said to be an auspicious colour hence red could be seen everywhere during a traditional occasion like this. An example of a symbol for Chinese New Year is the famous inverted 福. Other than that, there are also zodiac signs which changes in order when a new year comes. For example, the zodiac sign this year is 马.
Amos:
Chinese New Year is a time where the Chinese Calender starts a new year. As all Chinese people know, red is the colour for luck and prosperity. We can also see the Chinese character 福 everywhere.
Sui Kiat:
Chinese New Year is the start of a new year for Chinese people and the zodiac will change. Red is the colour for prosperity and success. A symbol we see is normally related to the year which it is. For example as this is the year of the horse, a symbol we see is 马到功成。
En Tong:
Chinese New Year is a major festival celebrated by most Chinese. They celebrate Chinese New Year since it symbolizes a new year in the lunar calendar, thus the Chinese celebrates it so that they would have luck and would be healthy in the brand new year. The places they mostly visit in Singapore are places like China town and River Hongbao(春到河畔). There are many practices too. For example, the Chinese are not allowed to sweep the floor on the first day of Chinese New Year since it means that the luck and fortune in their home would be swept away. Chinese New Year is a very auspicious festival thus the Chinese treat it very seriously and would always be fully prepared for it.

4 word challenge(school spirit)
“Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.”

Entong:
I think that school spirit is very important as it shows how connected and bonded we are as a school. The school spirit would also make everyone feel that they are in this big and caring family, RV family. The RV school spirit being showed made the parade a even more enjoyable and memorable one, since it was very heart warming. We should not be just bonded as a class, but also as a school, since we would be in this RV family for 6 years, probably even after the 6 years.
Fernanda:
I think that school spirit is something essential to keep the school life fun and interesting. Cheering for one another at times as a school shows how bonded the school is and how much fun everyone is going through. I personally think that RV has a lot of school spirit, and with this school spirit, it never fails to make events more hyped up and exciting. It drives us and act as a motivator to include us in all the activities.

Qianyu:
I think that school spirit is important for a school and it paints colors in our usually dull school life. Having school spirit, cheering each other on is especially essential during school events. Having school spirits allows us to enjoy the events with our friends a lot more. I believe that RVians who attended the 2014 Chingay parade showed more than enough school spirit, and the parade was a huge success. In RV, the RV spirit is also overflowing as shown from activities planned by our very own student counsel. RV is a extremely bonded a school. It is heartwarming to see and also to think that this RV spirit will be carried on for 10 years, 20 years and longer, after we graduate as our juniors will also take on the RV spirit. All in all, I believe that school spirit is important to the student body and in fact the whole school for our learning experiences to be fun. The Chingay Parade was a success and I definitely gained a lot from the parade!
Amos:
School spirit is a very important part of school life especially life in RV as is bonds us to together. As we are a IP school, it means that we will be together with each other for 6 years and as such, having a strong school spirit brings us together as one body. Imagine how cool will it be if you hear 2500 students cheering and supporting for our school. When other schools see our school spirit, they will look at us as a formidable opponent(competition) or a very bonded school. It shows that we are one BIG RV FAMILY and no one will ever be left behind.
Sui kiat:
I think that school spirit is required for the school to function as a whole and for everyone to enjoy the process. This is how we are part of one big rv family and that none of us are left behind. We should all be bonded to make events more fun and enjoyable.

Poverty in Singapore
The poverty in Singapore might not be obvious but it is definitely all around us. Of these people, most of them are senior citizens. They could not catch up to the fast economic growth and thus lagged behind. How about their children? Their children most probably abandoned them to catch up with the modern society. In addition, they might find them as a burden to their lives. Here are some pictures to show examples of these senior citizens :
As we can see, most of them are senior citizens, picking up recycled materials to make a living for themselves. Some are also homeless and live in the void decks of hdb flats.
They cannot rely on their children to lead a good life. These few examples clearly shows that Singapore still faces poverty even though we are quite a well developed country.

REFLECTIONS ON OUR HOLIDAY :D
Fernanda:
I went back to school quite often during the holidays. So basically, me and a few of my cca mates got selected to participate in the fsd competition this coming March. We spent most of the time during the holidays going back to school to choreograph movements for our routine. I personally feel that it is a really good opportunity for me to be exposed to the different aspects of NCC. The journey might be tough at times but i felt that i grew a lot as a person from it. I learnt how to be even more responsible during trainings and that every single one of us ought to contribute to the team. I find myself being more responsible for my work perhaps because of the fact that i have limited time to complete my homework everyday. I really feel that it is an enriching part of my life, and really hope to do well in the competition this year.
Amos:
I did not really go anywhere during the holidays, only a small 2 days 1 night trip to Thailand which took 12 hour coach ride to reach. It was an overnight bus ride which means that I left Singapore at around 8pm and reached at around 8am. Other than the trip, I stayed in Singapore for the rest of my holiday. I spent half watching YouTube, playing FIFA 13 on PS3. I did go back to school for holiday acts (CCA) as i am from NCC. I needed to go back 3 times in total. 2 times was to do drills and physical training. The other one was ROD which basically mean retirement of duty. Our year 4 seniors were stepping down and we held a ceremony to commemorate their times as their different ranks. I also spent time watching football and guess that my holiday was pretty okay.
Suikiat:
I went to China during the holidays. I went to eat Beijing duck and it tasted really nice. I also went to the Great Wall of China and the scenery and weather there is great. I missed their cold but refreshing weather. China is a really wonderful place but i couldn't really catch their accent at first. But after a while, i noticed the beauty of China and its rich history. I hope that i could learn more and increase my knowledge of China's 5000 years of experience.
Entong:
During the holidays I did not really go anywhere, but there was this one day where I spent at wild wild Wet with my family members. I played many thrilling games there and had a great time there. The last time I went to wild wild Wet before that day was 7 years ago so I can't remember anything about there at all so when I went there again, I felt that it was a brand new experience. I hope that I would have another chance to spend such a meaningful time with my family members:)
Qianyu:
I went to china, a country that i visit often, during the holidays. As usual, i went to visit my relatives and had a lot of fun with my cousins whom i had missed dearly. My family then visited 厦门, also known as Amoy in english. We went on a island named 鼓浪屿 by boat. The island was shaped like a piano and everyone living on the island had a piano. It was a beautiful island, with music flowing from all directions once you stepped on the island. It was a breathtaking place and many newlyweds visited the island to take their wedding pictures. The place had a vintage feel to it and it was beautiful with all the delicate flowers and the elegant scenary. Time flew by and we had a lot of fun on the island. Two weeks went by in the blink of an eye and my vacation in china ended on a beautiful note. The rest of my holidays were training in school and studying and i thought that it was quite well spent and would love to visit china again.
